Melatonin is the most-discussed sleep supplement in our data: 1,212 owner comments, with a SnoozeVerdict score of 3.7. It is also the one owners most often link with grogginess (74 rated comments) and vivid dreams (49), and dose comes up in 255 rated comments.
What NIH says it may help with
NIH says melatonin may help with sleep problems from jet lag or shift work and with how quickly people fall asleep, while two clinical practice guidelines advised against using it for chronic insomnia.[NCCIH] A 2013 meta-analysis found melatonin shortened the time to fall asleep by about 7 minutes on average.[PubMed]
Dose: why "less is more" comes up on Reddit
Trials have mostly used 0.5 to 5 mg, and a 2024 dose-response meta-analysis looked at which doses and timings were linked to the largest effects.[PubMed] Many US products sell 5 to 10 mg or more per serving. Owners on Reddit frequently describe switching to 0.5 to 1 mg after next-day grogginess or vivid dreams at higher doses.
Timing
Owners describe taking it anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours before bed; for jet lag and shift work, timing relative to the new schedule matters more than dose.[PubMed][PubMed] See the jet lag and shift work ranking.
Labels are often wrong
A 2023 study found 22 of 25 US melatonin gummy products were mislabeled, containing 74% to 347% of the stated amount, and one had none.[PubMed][NCCIH] A 2017 study found melatonin content varied widely between and within brands.[PubMed] Third-party-tested products (for example USP Verified) are one way owners try to get a predictable dose.
Keep it away from children
Reports of children swallowing melatonin rose sharply from 2012 to 2021, including hospitalizations.[PubMed] Store it like a medicine, and ask a doctor before giving melatonin to a child.[NCCIH]
